Sleeping In

Filed under: Words — melomania @ 8:44 pm

You know what I miss? Sleeping in. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can actually manage to schedule classes in college so that you get to sleep in all the time. Not me, because I was a music student, and for some reason, the music department seemed to think we were all capable of attending 8am classes, which is horribly and unbelievably WRONG, but I digress.

Now, I’m working full-time, and I have to get up every morning at 6:30. Well, my alarm goes off then. I don’t actually get up. Once I do, though, I make myself look presentable, and actually eat breakfast. See, it used to be that I could just roll out of bed at 7:30, leave the house at 7:45, and be in class at 8. Ok, maybe 8:05, but the point remains the same. That’s an hour that I don’t get to sleep anymore, except one day a week, my weekend, and usually my puppy ruins that because she hasn’t learned yet that I DON’T LIKE being woken up at 6 if I don’t have my alarm set. Yes, I know she’s a little old for this, but I’m still working on a strategy that involves her not needing to pee at all hours of the night. This strategy may involve the crate, which WILL involve her whining hysterically, hence my reluctance. At least when I get up and let her out, the whole experience only lasts about 5 minutes. The whining will last all night. Well, it usually only lasts 5 minutes. Except for that time she saw a mouse run across the back porch, chased it, and I couldn’t find her and had to go get my dad to help me. At 4 in the morning. But again, I digress.

The point here was that I miss sleeping in. I haven’t yet learned that in order to get up so early, I have to actually go to bed early, so I probably don’t get enough sleep. When I don’t work, though, I sleep til a good solid 11 or 12, after getting up sometime between 7 and 9 to let the puppy out. I miss my sleep. Or at least I miss my caffeine-induced wakeful state that I had in college due to an addiction to energy drinks. I actually justified buying energy drinks by saying they were cheaper than Starbucks. They are, but they’re a lot more expensive than making coffee at home.  Go figure.

I have a busy day ahead of me at work tomorrow (staying home sick creates a lot of backed-up work) so I should go to bed at a reasonable time tonight. We’ll have to see how long it takes me to get to sleep since I haven’t even been up for 12 hours yet. Actually, I don’t think I’ve even been up for 10. That’s ridiculous.
